Medieval Archaeologist

About the priory

The archaeological excavation reports carried out in 1992 and 1993. These major discoveries made it possible to bring the monument’s history fully up to date.

François Guyonnet, a medieval archaeologist, heritage director of L’Isle-sur-la-Sorgue and lecturer at the University of Avignon and the Pays de Vaucluse, led an archaeological excavation campaign in 1992 on the semi-rock dwellings located below the Priory in order to complete the previous study.

The update of the first group of dwellings (probably linked to the installation of the monks of Saint-Victor) offers a very interesting insight into what a rural peasant habitat in the 11th-12th century could have been (construction techniques, interior fittings, type of agricultural activity, etc.) and its evolution in the 13th-14th century during the reoccupation of the site.
